TL;DR: Karolinska Institutet, the university whose Nobel Assembly awards the prize in physiology or medicine, tested the credential market before it chose. Accredible from 2018, Credentials from Instructure in 2022, and neither fitted. Two requirements decided it: a certificate carrying both the participant's name and course text KI controls, and an integration that lives inside Canvas rather than beside it. KI has issued over a thousand course certificates with TRUE since the switch, and nobody types a name by hand.
Open the course certificate through the link the participant received. The page shows the participant’s name, the course text KI controls itself and that Karolinska Institutet issued it. You can also paste the link into TRUE Verify. The answer comes in a few seconds, and you do not need an account.
Precision, and no new work. Every process at Karolinska Institutet has to be traceable and built to last, and the certificate at the end of a course is not exempt from that. What it cannot be is a project of its own.
Carina Bois is Learning Technologist at KI. When she was asked to rethink how the university issues its course certificates, she did not go looking for the most impressive product.
Two platforms, over four years. Accredible from 2018. Credentials from Instructure in 2022.

“Neither of them really matched the way we work, or the level of clarity and control we needed.”
It is not a complaint about features. Both products work. Neither fitted a university that already had a way of doing things and did not intend to change it for a document.
Two, and KI treated both as non negotiable. The certificate had to carry the participant's name and course text the university could edit. And it had to work inside Canvas, the learning platform KI already runs.
Some tools offered flexibility and charged for it in complexity.
“Our teachers and administrators do not have time to wrestle with software. And students should never have to wonder about the certificate they receive.”
She is describing the recipient's experience as a requirement on the issuer's system, which is an unusual way to specify a document.
The administration disappeared into the course. TRUE connects directly to Canvas, so when a participant completes a course the certificate is issued and sent automatically. No printing, no chasing signatures, no separate system to remember.
“What we appreciate most is how smooth it is inside Canvas. We can deliver certificates in a way that feels completely natural in our existing workflow.”
Over a thousand course certificates have gone out that way since the switch. Nobody at KI has to think about it any more.
Because of what the certificate lets someone do. When a healthcare professional presents proof of training, the stakes are clinical. The person checking is deciding whether to let someone near a patient, a procedure or a set of instructions, and they need an answer that does not depend on whether KI answers the phone.
A certificate from Karolinska Institutet also carries weight far outside Sweden, which is precisely why it is worth forging. Proof that anyone can check, in seconds, is the only version of that document that survives contact with an international job market.
“We would go back to a very manual world. It is easy to forget how much time it used to take.”
She is glad that part is behind her, and says no serious university should be stuck in that kind of workflow.
Karolinska Institutet describes its own education and research at ki.se. Other schools that moved the same work into the systems they already run: IHM Business School and Berghs School of Communication. On how the integration itself works, see our note on certificate API integration.
More on digital diplomas and course certificates.
Accredible from 2018, and Credentials from Instructure in 2022. Carina Bois, Learning Technologist at KI, says neither matched the way they work or the level of clarity and control they needed.
Two requirements that were not up for negotiation: a certificate carrying both the participant's name and course text KI could edit, and an integration that sat inside Canvas, the LMS they already run.
Automatically. When a participant completes a course in Canvas, TRUE issues the blockchain secured certificate and sends it. There is no separate workflow and no manual step.
Because of what it lets someone do. When a healthcare professional presents a training certificate the question is clinical rather than administrative, and the person checking needs an answer that does not depend on reaching KI.
